Septic tanks are full of untreated wastewater that can be contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites and nitrates. Wastewater will eventually leak out if the tank is abandoned which will contaminate the soil, groundwater and possibly pollute local watercourses. In some cases an abandoned septic tank can entirely collapse if not filled in with soil.

It is important to pump the wastewater, as it contains bacteria and viruses that could make you or your family ill. Keep the pumping receipt as it acts as proof-of-pumping and will be required by Public Health as part of the approval process.
Fill in the tank with sand or gravel and put the access lid back in place or demolish the tank in situ. The soil around the septic tank should be slightly higher than ground level to allow for settling.
We will create a proof-of-pumping receipt with confirmation that your tank has been safely decommissioned so you can send a copy to the local council. The available space can then be considered for the new treatment tank to be installed.
